The historical formation of Brazil is distinguished from the majority of ex-colonial nations by one factor that is especially characteristic: an intense process of ethnic and cultural mixing. The Portuguese colonisers, who, unlike the English Puritans in North America, left their families and arrived in Brazil in small groups mainly composed of men, naturally tended to pair off with the women they found available - first of all indigenous women and later African women. There was nothing in Brazil to prevent (...) this spontaneous behaviour similar to the role played in the English colonies of North America by the strength of the family group or the strict religious observance of the community. Thus from the outset Brazil tended to accept racial mixing as a de facto reality. As Gilberto Freyre correctly noted in his book Casa Grande e Senzala:They mixed happily with women of colour from the very first contacts and many mixed-race children resulted, so much so that only a few thousand men were enough to colonize vast areas and compete with the greatest and most numerous peoples as regards the extent of the colonial territory and the effectiveness of colonizing activity. Lévinas é conhecido como pensador da alteridade, propõe um resgate à subjetividade e responsabilidade por outrem. Propomos nessa pesquisa analisar o “rosto” levinasiano, um dos elementos mais originais de sua filosofia. O rosto é a base de sua ética da alteridade. O rosto é a abertura para o infinito do ser, é discurso, é nudez, é expressão. A expressão do rosto é palavra viva, é o modo como Outro se apresenta a mim, nu e indigente. A expressão não se produz (...) como a manifestação de um forma plástica, ligados a um sistema de comparação, não se resume a características físicas, mas é o modo como o Outro se apresenta a mim. O rosto é o que escapa a qualquer manifestação que possa ser enquadrada por uma fenomenologia. Não há, em sentido habitual, uma fenomenologia do rosto. (shrink)

Adotando como referencial teórico a obra de Jürgen Habermas, bem como as bases para o seu pensamento na Escola de Frankfurt, o presente artigo busca analisar em que medida o horizonte que se vislumbra diante da crise sanitária pode ser tomado em perspectiva para se pensar a questão do direito ao meio ambiente sustentável. Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa qualitativa, sob o método hipotético-dedutivo, em uma abordagem exploratória e adotando a técnica de pesquisa bibliográfica. Ao final, conclui-se que a racionalidade (...) moderna necessita de novos paradigmas na relação homem-natureza, a qual não se pode ser mediada pela razão instrumental hegemônica. (shrink)

The present essay, of theoretical bibliographical nature, debates some fundamentals of the methodology employed in the analysis of Brazilian urban songs. The approach to the scarce debate involving an investigative method for folk songs relies on the chapter 14 of George Lukács’ Aesthetics. In particular, considering the aims of this essay, the item dedicated to music. Authors who investigate the particular scope of Brazilian urban folk song were consulted to approximate the specific elements of that music. The findings suggest that (...) the study of songs should refrain from dismissing the general categories of the aesthetics, however, their features demand certain cares, which also require a particular methodology to be applied to the contradictions inherent to Brazilian urban folk songs. Este artigo debate a relação entre a alegoria e o símbolo, temática importante para a Grande Estética de Lukács, uma vez que as distinções e as contraposições entre o alegórico e o simbólico possibilitam que o autor húngaro se aproxime do conceito de realismo. O realismo, para o esteta de Budapeste, é o que marca a autenticidade artística. Este trabalho opta por um estudo de caráter teórico-bibliográfico. Por meio de uma análise imanente sobre recorte da Estética do esteta magiar, o (...) artigo considera que a chamada arte de vanguarda, por se inclinar para uma alegoria vazia de conteúdo, abandona as demandas do drama humano. Esse abandono faz com que a arte moderna, de modo geral, caminhe em direção, do conformismo decorativo, por um lado, e, por outro, do inconformismo irracional. (shrink)

ABSTRACT The present article, which is theoretical, bibliographical as well as phonographic-documental in nature, aims to reflect on how daily life influenced Jackson do Pandeiro’s compositions and interpretations. Moments of Jackson do Pandeiro’s trajectory and excerpts of songs were selected to expose the importance of daily life for his work. The article shows that Jackson do Pandeiro’s works establish a dialectic relationship with the society that raised him, enabling listeners to access a critical potency. This potentiality grants them a new (...) set of lenses to interpret daily life, which, in turn, is the cradle of artists’ inspiration. This set of factors led the musical sphere as well as some of the Brazilian intellectual elite to consider Jackson do Pandeiro the King of Rhythm in the Música Popular Brasileira, MPB [Brazilian Folk Music]. RESUMO O presente artigo, de natureza teórico, bibliográfica e fonográfico-documental, objetiva realizar uma reflexão acerca de como o cotidiano influencia as composições e as interpretações de Jackson do Pandeiro. Para isso, elegeram-se alguns traços da trajetória do músico paraibano. Para efeito do texto, recortam-se determinadas canções do artista com o intuito de demonstrar a importância do cotidiano para a obra do cantor. A título de considerações, o artigo documenta que a obra do músico, em relação dialética com a sociedade que (...) o cria, possibilita que os receptores tenham acesso a uma potência crítica. Essa potencialidade dota os receptores de uma nova lente para interpretar o cotidiano, o qual, por sua vez, é o solo próprio de nascimento das inspirações musicais do artista. Esse conjunto de fatores levou o meio musical e parte da intelectualidade brasileira a considerar Jackson do Pandeiro o Rei do Ritmo da chamada Música Popular Brasileira (MPB). (shrink)

O artigo busca desenvolver a articulação entre a pessoa privada e a necessidade religiosa. Toma-se como base o chão do cotidiano, dado que é ali onde o sujeito singular vivencia sua práxis. Com base na relação entre a vivência cotidiana do sujeito singular e sua elevação a um patamar superior de vivência, tematiza-se o papel da religião, da ciência e da arte no soerguimento desse sujeito a tal patamar superior de convivência. O texto, metodologicamente, realiza um estudo de caráter teórico-bibliográfico, (...) em que se elege, como meio para atingir a finalidade proposta pelo objeto, a leitura imanente do Capítulo 16 da Grande estética de Georg Lukács. A título de considerações, problematiza-se que a relação entre a necessidade religiosa e a arte se apresenta de modo distinto, na contemporaneidade, do que foi, por exemplo, no Renascimento, haja vista que, nessa nova forma contemporânea, a configuração entre religião e arte mostra-se problemática para o complexo artístico. As consequências dessa problemática acarretam dificuldades para que a arte mantenha seu caráter realista. Com isso, a capacidade artística de desenvolver as determinações necessárias da criação, fica comprometida. Consequentemente, a obra não consegue apanhar, por meio da dialética imanente da vida humano-social, os caracteres que possibilitam configurar seres humanos e suas relações socialmente típicas. Quanto mais esse efeito cresce, mais os artistas procuram introduzir, em suas composições, categorias externas ao campo da arte, a exemplo de descrições científicas. Isso cria sérias dificuldades para que o realismo artístico possa ser plasmado na obra acabada. O resultado desse quadro é o aumento dos obstáculos para que a arte registre a autoconsciência humana. O presente artigo enfrenta a questão da distinção entre sentido e significado nas Investigações Filosóficas. Considerando a mudança radical na virada linguístico-pragmática ocorrida no pensamento de Wittgenstein, que passa a situar tanto o sentido quanto o significado no âmbito do uso que fazemos da linguagem, procura-se mostrar que distinguir as noções de sentido e de significado, nas Investigações Filosóficas, não somente é possível, mas também é de fundamental importância para uma mais ampla compreensão desses termos no pensamento do segundo Wittgenstein. Por conseguinte, contrapõe-se a leitura atenta do parágrafo 556 das Investigações Filosóficas à interpretação tradicional, que não se preocupa em distinguir sentido de significado, desejando apontar e fundamentar tal proposta. Embora ocupe um lugar importante na arquitectura conceptual do pensamento kantiano, a noção de antagonismo raramente merece especial atenção dos estudiosos de Kant. Este artigo procura combater esse esquecimento, enfatizando a relevância daquele conceito, em particular na filosofia política de Kant. Serão consideradas nomeadamente a dualidade/convergência dos conceitos de “guerra” e “paz” e a forma como a noção de antagonismo serve de sólido alicerce para a ideia kantiana de progresso. Procurarei mostrar como a proposta de edificação de um estado de (...) direito (em um nível interno e externo) é, no fim de contas, gerada por um estímulo negativo – a discórdia intersubjectiva e a necessidade de os homens se entenderem para garantir a sua sobrevivência. Esta análise sublinhará a relação intrínseca entre uma dinâmica de conflito e o inevitável desenvolvimento das disposições naturais do homem em direcção a um estado de mútua concórdia. (shrink)

O objetivo do artigo é explorar as conexões entre o problema da morte, o conceito de ideia e a tese da indestrutibilidade do nosso ser com a morte, em Schopenhauer. Como ponto de partida, é apresentada a crítica de Schopenhauer à compreensão empírica da morte como passagem ao não-ser. Passa-se, então às considerações do filósofo sobre a indestrutibilidade do nosso ser com a morte, por meio do destaque às suas considerações sobre o caráter de coisa, vinculado à sua intepretação das (...) ideias como formas eternas. Após discorrer pontualmente a respeito do sentido desta noção na filosofia platônica, são apresentados os principais elementos que configuram a apropriação schopenhaueriana da teoria platônica das ideias tendo em vista exclusivamente o problema elegido, qual seja, a morte e a indestrutibilidade do nosso ser. This article presents a discussion about using one’s body – in its several occurrences, forms and meanings – for sex, affection and money transactions, within and beyond the scope of prostitution. It results from research carried out with young women involved in prostitution in two Brazilian north-eastern towns. The women’s views, conceptualisations and experiences reveal a prolific construction of discursive differentiation categories, which are linked to a set of moralities within local/regional economies and within notions of family. Through the women’s (...) personal narratives and experiences, our study demystifies the persistent idea of victimisation; it aims at understanding the young women prostitutes in their own contexts – loci that are highly stigmatised and seen as needing to be controlled or ‘developed’. We collected data that allows us to build a counter-discourse to oppose the ever-present attempts at weakening these voices and effacing their meaning-making. Within this context of knowledge production, our research is meaningful and purposeful in addressing the situation of young women in contexts of prostitution. Our main argument is that in certain contexts, such as those studied in this project, sex, affection and kinship are structured as normative – rather than exceptional – ways for women to have access to money. Uma das formas do poder feminino-africano se manifesta de forma acentuada no campo da espiritualidade, tanto no mundo visível, ou seja, dos vivos, quanto no mundo invisível, o dos mortos. Este artigo faz parte de uma pesquisa em andamento, sobre o poder exercido pelas mulheres africanas e que raras vezes são consideradas ou visibilizadas como formas de poder na contramão de uma vasta literatura em que as mulheres, na sua maioria, são consideradas submissas. O interesse recai sobre práticas de tornar-se (...) djambakus, Balobêru, nganga, Mutombe ou tchimbanda em duas realidades, a guineense e a angolana. A riqueza dos relatos das experiências de uma guineense, moradora de Ziguinchor, Senegal, com foco nas tradições ancestrais para transmitir e explicar o sagrado por intermédio da história oral, reforçam a análise da concepção do lugar destas mulheres no exercício do poder ocultado. O trabalho é de caráter teórico-qualitativo: revisão de literatura, entrevistas e história oral. O recurso da oralidade dialoga com a condição de escassez de documentos escritos sobre curandeiras, djambacus, Balobêru e nganga que se dedicam a curar. Foi entrevistada uma djambakus que transita entre Guiné-Bissau e Senegal. Os resultados apontam para a potência de mulheres na prática sagrada de cura pelo encontro de conhecimentos populares, saberes africanos tradicionais, ancestrais e do bem-estar de suas comunidades ou tabancas. Apresentaremos as possíveis aplicações pedagógicas das suas reflexões, como a utilização da imprecisão científica de Heisenberg e da concepção de técnica em Heidegger, a partir da análise histórico-filosófica dos seus escritos, tomando-os como fundamentação a necessária e significativa melhoria da educação técnico-científica.

In Brazilian schools, many teachers do not organize their teaching and students’ tasks and actions in a way that facilitates theoretical thinking based on the abstraction and generalization of the work content. Because many students struggle to accomplish the tasks and actions themselves, teachers guide them. Over time, the students begin to have more autonomy in executing the proposed activities, as they completed mental operations while learning. This article aims to investigate how young people’s and adults’ awareness of the countryside (...) is formed based on visual elements and writing, facilitating an understanding of their reality. A didactic–formative experiment was performed based on the cultural–historical theory. The comic books produced by the participants allowed them to develop their overall thinking, moving from the abstract to the concrete. They also formed an awareness of reality, which allowed them to have greater autonomy in the production of these stories as a means of representation and transformation of reality. (shrink)

This issue has provoked debate because it touches on the ethics of research and the relationships with the people involved in these studies. This case study aimed to investigate community perception of an ethnobotany research project that was carried out in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. Furthermore, we reported how the residents of this rural community felt about participating in the activities of “return” that arose from (...) the projects. Our findings demonstrate that “return” activities should be planned from the design phase of the research until its closure as a lifelong process that allows the communities involved to gradually take ownership of the information and actions that are being generated. Similarly, we argue that such activities must be negotiated with the people of the community so that they have decision-making power and autonomy to decide what is most relevant to their lives. In the works of the spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset (1893-1955), which is one prominent Iberian thinker, there exists a very interesting projective reflection of the figure of culture in the twentieth century, in consonance with Oswald Spengler's pessimistic thought. What they both have in common is the existential need to decipher the signs of the times we live (...) in. Because of this, Ortega recovers common philosophical and sociogical topics such as life, massification, hedonism, and nihilism, which Gilles Lipovetsky uses in order to ground the new paradigm of hypermodernity based on artistic (trans-aesthetic) capitalism. RESUMEN O presente estudo visa basicamente estabelecer uma compreensão filosófico- cultural das grandes linhas de força do sentir e do viver contemporâneos. Oriundo do labor intelectual de um dos maiores pensadores ibéricos, o filósofo espanhol José Ortega y Gasset, existe nesta figura da cultura de princípios do século XX, uma interessantíssima reflexão projectiva, em consonância com o pensamento pessimista de Oswald Spengler. O que neles existe de comum, é a necessidade existencial em decifrar os sinais dos tempos, da época (...) em que vivemos. Isto faz Ortega recuperar temáticas filosófico-sociológicas como a vida, a massificação, o hedonismo e o niilismo. Estas serão utilizadas por Gilles Lipovetsky para fundamentar o novo paradigma da hipermodernidade, baseado no capitalismo artista. In this paper I distinguish two ways of raising a sceptical problem of others' minds: via a problem concerning the possibility of error or via a problem concerning sources of knowledge. I give some reason to think that the second problem raises a more interesting problem in accounting for our knowledge of others’ minds and consider proposed solutions to the problem.

In the essays which make up The Sovereignty of Good, Iris Murdoch gives us a picture of moral life in which ‘the metaphor of vision [is] almost irresistibly suggested’. This chapter aims to clarify the role played by the metaphor of vision in Murdoch’s philosophical thinking. I’ll examine two different things which might be meant by the term ‘moral vision’: vision of moral things or vision which is itself moral. The suggestion will be that whilst both capture something important about (...) Murdoch’s work, each may mislead about what is distinctive in her views. For Murdoch, I shall suggest, there is no distinctively moral vision. There is only vision: a loving gaze directed upon the reality of others. (shrink)

Internalism and externalism disagree about whether agents who are internally the same can differ in their mental states. But what is it for two agents to be internally the same? Standard formulations take agents to be internally the same in virtue of some metaphysical fact, for example, that they share intrinsic physical properties. Our aim in this chapter is to argue that such formulations should be rejected. We provide the outlines of an alternative formulation on which agents are internally the (...) same in virtue of facts about their epistemic capacities. The resulting formulation is one on which internalism and externalism are views about the extent to which an agent’s mental states can vary independently of the capacity for introspective discrimination. We suggest that this epistemic formulation of internalism and externalism picks out a substantive disagreement in philosophical theorizing about the nature of the mind. (shrink)

L'auteur caractérise dans un premier temps les spécificités du temps historique et des processus de temporalisation à même d'engendrer des idées d'ordre historique. Il se penche ensuite sur l'analyse de diverses philosophies de l'histoire : chacune est prise dans sa spécificité, pour en dégager les rapports de force qui déterminent socialement la notion du temps. Dans une troisième partie, l'auteur confronte la notion contemporaine d'événement à ses limites (...) pratiques, avant d'analyser l'oeuvre de Hegel pour en extraire une théorie de la contingence, à l'aide notamment du couple conceptuel de nécessité et de possibilité. Ce parcours analytique s'achève sur le rapport marxien entre nature et histoire, entendu comme la sphère philosophique apte à donner forme à une histoire tantôt déterminée, tantôt ouverte aux enjeux des médiations du hasard. Berkeley's critique of abstract ideas in the Introduction to Principles of Human Knowledge has provoked a great deal of commentary of various sorts. This anthology, first published in 1989, presents a selection of historically important and philosophically interesting discussions on Berkeley's theories.

Phenomenal particularism is the view that particular external objects are sometimes part of the phenomenal character of perceptual experience. It is a central part of naïve realist or relational views of perception. We consider a series of recent objections to phenomenal particularism and argue that naïve realism has the resources to block them. In particular, we show that these objections rest on assumptions about the nature of phenomenal character that the naïve realist will reject, and that they ignore the full (...) resources that naïve realism has to offer in explaining phenomenal character. For Kant, the human cognitive faculty has two sub-faculties: sensibility and the understanding. Each has pure forms which are necessary to us as humans: space and time for sensibility; the categories for the understanding. But Kant is careful to leave open the possibility of there being creatures like us, with both sensibility and understanding, who nevertheless have different pure forms of sensibility. They would be finite rational beings and discursive cognizers. But they would not be human. And this raises a (...) question about the pure forms of the understanding. Does Kant leave open the possibility of discursive cognizers who have different categories? Even if other discursive cognizers might not sense like us, must they at least think like us? We argue that textual and systematic considerations do not determine the answers to these questions and examine whether Kant thinks that the issue cannot be decided. Consideration of his wider views on the nature and limits of our knowledge of mind shows that Kant could indeed remain neutral on the issue but that the exact form his neutrality can take is subject to unexpected constraints. The result would be an important difference between what Kant says about discursive cognizers with other forms of sensibility and what he is in a position to say about discursive cognizers with other forms of understanding. O artigo problematiza elementos implicados ao que seria um “direito dos governados” e ao problema do Estado de exceção. A biopolítica comparece como estreitamente relacionada tanto ao primeiro quanto ao segundo desses fatores. A motivação de fundo do artigo não é a oposição entre Estado de exceção e os direitos humanos. Trata-se de como pensar um direito à resistência da parte daqueles que, na condição de governados, veem transpostos seus limiares de tolerância ao que se lhes apresenta como algo da (...) ordem do intolerável. De um lado, este remete à omissão e/ou negligência, pelo poder soberano, em garantir atenção e/ou proteção às necessidades vitais de certos grupos ou coletividades que se encontrariam, temporária ou permanentemente, em situaçãode risco, vulnerabilidade e/ou exclusão. De outro, remete, primeiro, às diversas modalidades de controle e governocom as quais o poder soberano e as corporações empresariais regulamentam, comercializam e modulam os modos de vida das populações e a conduta dos indivíduos que a elas pertencem; segundo, à magnitude com que se realizam esse controle e governo dos vivos. A estratégia analítica adotada faz um movimento pendular que vai de Foucault-Deleuze a Agamben-Schmitt, e vice-versa. Obviamente, leva-se em conta que esses dois polos não podem ser tomados como equivalentes entre si nem tampouco como homogêneos, tanto um em face do outro, quanto ambos em face do direito. Em todo caso, considera-se produtiva a estratégia de conduzir a investigação recorrendo-se, de um lado, a Agamben e a Schmitt, para abordar o tema do Estado de exceção, e, de outro, a afinidades existentes entre Foucault e Deleuze, para tratar do tema do direito dos governados. The eliminative view of gauge degrees of freedom—the view that they arise solely from descriptive redundancy and are therefore eliminable from the theory—is a lively topic of debate in the philosophy of physics. Recent work attempts to leverage properties of the QCD $$\theta _{\text {YM}}$$ θ YM -term to provide a novel argument against the eliminative view. The argument is based on the claim that the QCD $$\theta _{\text {YM}}$$ θ YM -term changes under “large” gauge transformations. Here we review (...) geometrical propositions about fiber bundles that unequivocally falsify these claims: the $$\theta _{\text {YM}}$$ θ YM -term encodes topological features of the fiber bundle used to represent gauge degrees of freedom, but it is fully gauge-invariant. Nonetheless, within the essentially classical viewpoint pursued here, the physical role of the $$\theta _{\text {YM}}$$ θ YM -term shows the physical importance of bundle topology (or superpositions thereof) and thus counts against (a naive) eliminativism.
